acted on instinct because he thought there was a burglar in the house. investigators have pieced together a different scenario. cbs news has learned that police believe steenkamp slept next to him. she was shot once in the bedroom and three more in the bathroom. and three more shots were shot through the door, hitting her as she covered her head with her hands. the shooting has brought about a bunch of headlines. mandy says the bat is a key part of the investigation. >> they're looking at a few scenarios, we understand. one that said steenkamp was useless trying to defend herself. also reports that oscar pistorius may have used it. >> now, his legendary career is on hold. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness

news. >> pistorius's long-time track coach says he thinks the shooting death is an accident and looks forward to getting him back on the track field. there is a reward for information in the murder of a university of maryland eastern shore student. vic is in the newsroom with more on the third state university student killed in less than a week. vic? >> well, crimesolvers is awaiting word. grief counselors are trying to help students cope with the murder of 21-year-old edward sinclaire. he was stabbed to death near the pavilion. police are looking for three male suspects in their late teens or early 20s. it is unclear if they are ume students. >> thank you, vic. last week, a university of maryland college park student shot and killed one of his housemates, wounded another, and took his own life. anyone with information on the eastern shore murders is asked

to call crimestoppers. more fallout after a police trainee is shot by a police instructor. today, a city police commissioner, anthony batts is naming joseph smith as the new department of education training section. last week, a training officer, william scott kern, shot a trainee in the head. the trainee remains in critical condition at shock trauma. state police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. toddler slapped. an angry man with a crying baby is arrested for hitting the child in the face. anna marie green reports for wjz on the incident that is causing widespread outrage. >> reporter: the trouble started brewing almost immediately, when jessica bennett and her 2-year-old adopted son jonah took their seats next to joe humbly on a flight from minneapolis to atlanta, earlier this month. >> i said, oh, we're sitting next to you. and he just basically rolled his eyes and growled at us.

>> reporter: hunley allegedly began to complain that jonah was too big to sit on his mother's lap, becoming more outspoken as the flight continued. >> he was annoyed with his comments. he would turn my light back on after i would turn it off. and constantly saying things in regards to my son. so i took us out of the situation and stood by the bathroom. >> she stood there with jonah for 90 minutes, only returning for the landing. when the two sat down, jonah began to cry, and hunley became irate. >> he looked at me in a really hateful way. and he said, "f'ing "[ bleep ] >> shocked. jessica gave hunley a chance. >> i said, "what did you say?" >> reporter: huhry pushed -- hunley pushed up against her face and repeated himself. when she pushed back, he slapped jonah across the face.

>> reporter: days later, hunley was charged with assault. and while jonah may have only suffered a scrape, his mother worries about the long-term damage. >> he has suffered from this for sure. >> reporter: hundley works for an aerospace parts manufacturer. they said he was no longer employed with the company. anna marie green, new york. >> in fact, agc aerospace has since decided to fire hundley. and he is now facing federal assault charges. they have changed charm city skyline. and now, four massive cranes at the segert marine terminal mean big money for baltimore's port. this is part of an expansion project with ports of baltimore and ports of america. the mega crane would bring to the chesapeake bay. the crane stretched 400 feet.

right now go, they are generally in the 40-degree range. and winds have turned around to the southwest. and that sort of allowed some of the colder air to start retreating off to the north. you can see, here's the coldest of the air. that's moving away right now. there's a warmup behind that. and another round of cold air out west that is going to follow. here's a sign that the pattern is going up and down the next couple of days. and that's what we're going to be dealing with. next storm system comes in, bringing that warmer air, it's mainly going to be in the form of rain for us. may see a little bit of a mix at the very beginning and the end of this storm. but for the most part, this is going to be rain for us once again. clouds come in tonight. the rain for the most part, breaks out for tomorrow. and out west, though, that's a different story, though. where we do see winter weather advisories in effect. for the rest of us, it's mainly met form of rain. here's the storm. the of center -- the center of it allowing warm air to come our way. we'll get close to 50 degrees with that rain. but the winds turn back out,

killing spree as revenge for what he called corruption in the police department. there was a shootout that left dorner dead. >> reporter: this is the bold- action sniper rifle that dorner had with him. the word vengeance can be seen printed on the stock. but it wasn't vengeance that killed dorner. it was a bullet to the head. >> the information we have now seems to be that the wound that took christopher dorner's life was self-inflicted. >> reporter: the rubble burned down after intense fire with police. two deputies died and one was wounded. >> reporter: they already considered him a cop killer. >> reporter: with deputies already down outside the big bear cabin and dorner holed up inside, police tried using cold tear gas to smoke him out. >> he did not surrender. >> reporter: police radio then picked up what appeared to be

calls for pyrotechnic gas cannisters, which can cause fires. >> we're going to go forward with the burn. like we talked about. >> deployed and woo have -- we have a fire. >> reporter: shortly after, police heard what they now believe was dorner's suicide shot. san bernsan bernardino's sheriff's says that this was not set on fire. >> would -- i would suggest to you that those comentsdzs are made-- comments were made by someone away from the tactical team. >> reporter: in los angeles, edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, dozens of protestors rallied in support of dorner over the weekend. demonstrators say they do not agree with dorner's methods but they say his claims about police corruption are valid. we're learning more about the maryland woman who police

say is responsible. kai is in the newsroom with the latest details on this case. >> reporter: the details are disturbing. police say a 19-year-old woman from montgomery county kidnapped the girl by posing as her mother. she disguised herself in a burqa to fool school officials. the child was allegedly taken to a home two blocks away, sexually assaulted, then abandoned on the street. ra gusters is facing nearly a dozen felony charges, including kidnap and rape. rag juster is being held on $4 million bail. police are still looking for additional suspects. >> reporter: rag juster is a graduate of spring brook high school in mont gom cree county. minutes ago, police reported a leak in a oil line caused the carnival triumph to catch fire. >> reporter: you're being -- looking at tent city.

the deck of the carnival triumph, where thousands of passengers slept while trapped on board. others chose the hallway or even the lounges. >> this is where the line starts to get grilled food. like grilled chicken and pork. >> reporter: during her eight days on board, dee tucker said she waited in line for 27 hours. and usually, the food was gone when she finally made it to the front. >> this is what is left of the dessert. they say they never run out. >> reporter: she said she ate fruit are for every meal. there was a long line. and sanitation. here's dee, scooping urine into the shower drain. these red bags had to replace toilets. and take a look at this picture, you can see the sewage, litally -- literally coming down the walls. in this video, you can see a cruise ship employee, picking up pieces of cardboard off the floor. tucker said the cardboard was put there to soak up the liquid that was floating through carpets. but there were some moments of

levity. here's dee, posing in front of a bed sheet full of passengers and passengers and messages. one said, poor planning. dee tucker even made this special note for her fiance joe, who is back in cape coral. and apparently the cruise ship director used one word, over and over. the passengers started imitating her. >> brilliant. brilliant. >> reporter: but the most joy came at the end when they finally saw the lights of mobile, alabama, which signified the end of their nightmare vacation. >> reporter: now, the coast guard says the investigation of the disabled cruise ship could take six months. after 15 years of solitary confinement, the man convicted of the 1993 world trade center bombing is reportedly suing to get out of containment. hes a-- he wants a federal judge to move him into open prison see he can get more --

so he can get more time outside. he is in a super max prison that keeps him in solitary confinement, 24 hours a day. a draft of a reform plan is getting a frosty reception on capitol hill. danielle noting ram reports from washington. republicans are accusing president obama of meddling in bipartisan immigration reform plans. after a draft of the white house immigration reform proposal leaked over the weekend. >> leaks don't happen in washington by accident. this raises the question that many of us continue to wonder about. does the president really want a result? >> reporter: the white house is downplaying the leak, saying the draft is only a backup, if lawmakers don't come up with an immigration reform proposal. >> we will be prepared with our own plan, if these ongoing talks between republicans and democrats up on capitol hill break down. >> reporter: in the senate, four republicans and four democrats are working on hammering out their own deal.

they are hopeful they'll have a bill ready by march. >> reporter: president obama has made immigration reform one of the top priorities of his second term. >> the time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform. [ applause ] now is the time to do it. >> reporter: the administration's leaked proposal, would allow some illegal immigrants to become permanent rintsds within eight years, boost funding for border security and require workers-- employers to know the status of their workers. senator marco rubio blasted the plan,ul caking it dead on arrival. rubio blasted them for not addressing guest workers or the potential influx for illegal immigrant workers. >> gop critics say the president's proposal also doesn't do enough to strengthen border security. president obama said he wants congress to have a bill ready

next month. going up, cas gas prices continue to skyrocket as we approach spring. nationwide, drivers are feeling the sting. analysts are blaming the spike on rising crude oil prices, refinery and production cuts. nationwide, the average for a gallon of gas is now 3.73. a little worse for local drivers. last month, would average price for a gallon of regular here was $3.38. but today, that same gallon has jumped to $3.74. that's up 36 cents. well, gas prices are going up. but it seems like temperatures may be heading in the other direction. let's take a live look outside, where things have been rather chilly today, after a very cold weekend. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is here about the updated numbers first from first warning weather. bob? >> right now, we're about 8 degrees warmer than we were yesterday at this time. so that's an improvement. even warmer than tomorrow. take a look at temps now.

in sky eye chopper 13. what's going on, jeff? >> looks like city firefighters have this fire under control at this house on leticia drive, right near washington boulevard, in the morel park area, south baltimore. several fire trucks on the scene. we saw a little bit of white smoke coming out of the building, just a little bit ago. and they were putting quite a bit of water on there. but now that seems to be taken care of. and we'll stay on scene and let you know if anything else occurs. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. back to you. let's go over to the weather center and get a check on the chilly temperatures. bob? >> a little warmer today than yesterday. we had wind chills in the single digits at times. today, a lot milder. 40, light winds out of the south and southwest. humidity is very low. this is a very dry air mass. dew points at 5 donees -- degrees. barometer is high now. currently rising. 39 in oakland. 41 in d.c. and 39 in the eastern shore. locally, upper 30s to near 40

degrees. won't be nearly as cold tonight as we saw this morning because the winds are going back to the southwest, bringing in some much milder air. so tomorrow is going to be even warmer than today. look at these temps down to the south of us. 50s and some 60s. chicago is 50. but northwest of that region, another front bringing in more cold air. so what we've got is a warmup tomorrow, with some rain, all along that frontal boundary, with some showers. then it turns colder and breezy again here on wednesday. so we've got an up-and-down week once again. all in all, not terrible weather. we'll see rain tomorrow, with this front out to the west. showers breaking out right now across the midwest. behind it, there is some snow. that is going to head up to the great lakes. the only place in maryland that could see frozen precip. maybe snow and sleet. garrett, allegheny, and maybe washington county. if the front gets here sooner, they'll probably clear out. but we do expect to see some precip to the west of us. we'll see light rain. as temperatures will be much,
